Finding My Way to Slovenia: A Promise Kept

I was fourteen, just a small-town kid with good grades and a budding curiosity about the world. That summer, I earned a spot at a youth camp in Slovenia, nestled in the breathtaking mountains of Kranjska Gora. It would be my first real trip abroad, the first time away from home and family for any stretch of time. I didn’t know what to expect, but the adventure was already calling.

Slovenia swept me off my feet. The soaring peaks, green valleys, and forested paths were like something from a storybook. While camp kept us busy, we had pockets of free time, and I made the most of it, drawn to the trails that wound their way up the mountains. One day, I found a path that led me higher and higher, through a dense forest, until I stumbled onto a meadow—a serene, flower-filled paradise overlooking Kranjska Gora below. In that moment, standing amid the wildflowers with the valley stretching out before me, I made a promise: One day, I’ll come back here.

Years passed, life went on, and I nearly forgot my silent vow to Slovenia. But somehow, as if destiny had a hand in it, my work offered me an eight-month position in—where else?—Slovenia. This time, it wasn’t just a brief visit. I learned the language, forged friendships, and explored the country deeply. Every corner held something familiar yet new, a place that had somehow rooted itself in my heart.

Slovenia became a part of me, a place where my traveler’s heart found a home. As I like to say now: I feel sLOVEnia.

Kranjska Gora

Where Adventure Meets Serenity

Nestled in Slovenia’s Julian Alps, Kranjska Gora has become a gem for travelers seeking natural beauty and adventure. It’s no longer just a quiet mountain village; it’s now a lively destination that has something for everyone, from ski enthusiasts to summer hikers. In winter, the town transforms into a snowy paradise for skiing and snowboarding, thanks to its well-maintained slopes and reliable snow cover. The resort offers trails for all levels, making it an ideal spot for families and pros alike. With a range of ski schools and rental shops, it’s easy for beginners to jump in, while experts can explore more challenging runs.

When the snow melts, Kranjska Gora’s charm only deepens. Summer brings out verdant forests and blooming meadows, unveiling hiking trails that lead to pristine alpine lakes and breathtaking viewpoints. One popular trek is to Lake Jasna, a glacial lake with crystal-clear water reflecting the towering peaks around it. Whether you’re into gentle strolls or rugged hikes, the area’s network of trails lets you discover the beauty of Slovenia’s alpine landscapes at your own pace. And for those looking to explore on two wheels, mountain biking trails wind through the forests and hills, offering thrilling routes and panoramic views.

Beyond its natural beauty, Kranjska Gora has a rich cultural side that draws visitors to its historic sites and traditional Slovenian hospitality. The local restaurants serve up hearty dishes like jota (a Slovenian sauerkraut and bean soup) and mountain cheeses, giving a taste of the region’s culinary heritage. Nearby, the Russian Chapel, built in memory of Russian soldiers who perished during WWI, is a moving historical site surrounded by peaceful woodlands. With its mix of history, culture, and stunning scenery, Kranjska Gora captures the spirit of Slovenia and offers travelers a taste of alpine magic that stays with them long after they leave.

Discovering the Hidden Gem of Zelenci Nature Reserve

Just a short drive from Kranjska Gora lies Zelenci Nature Reserve, a place that feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Known for its vibrant emerald-green lake, Zelenci is a tranquil oasis surrounded by dense forest and dramatic mountain backdrops. The lake itself, though small, is famous for its clear waters fed by underground springs, creating a shimmering turquoise surface that reveals every detail of the sandy bottom. A wooden boardwalk winds around the reserve, allowing visitors to explore its delicate ecosystem without disturbing the flora and fauna. Zelenci is home to rare plant species and various wildlife, including waterfowl and amphibians, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike. Visiting Zelenci is a calming experience, perfect for those looking to escape into nature’s beauty and feel the serenity of Slovenia’s untouched landscapes.

HEY, I’M EDINA…

I was born with a wanderlust. For as long as I can remember, my world has been in motion. Whether it’s a small trip or a big adventure, the important thing is that something’s moving beneath me—be it puffing, rolling, chugging, flying, or floating. It could be a bike, a motorbike, a car, a bus, a train, a canoe, a boat, a ferry, or even a plane. And if none of those are an option, at least my legs keep me going. Every journey is a gift for my soul, even if it’s just a stroll through the fields or a visit to the next village.
